These are a couple of personal favorites for finding flight deals

The airport shuttle  at Toulouse airport leaves the airport every 20 minutes and takes approximately 25 minutes to arrive at Toulouse Matabiau SNCF station.  You can buy your SNCF train ticket to Quillan in advance.  You will have to change at Carcassonne.

Quillan is on the Carcassonne branch line and is about 50 minutes south of Carcassonne.  This part of the journey, when tickets are not bought in advance cost a mere 1 Euros per journey.  There are a number of trains a day but often SNCF replace the train with the coach.  The coach (coach is car in French) leaves from a park next to the tracks which is easily located.  Just find out whether your journey is going to be by train or by car.  This is indicated on the Carcassonne Quillan branch line timetable.

Catch the Quillan bus or train from Carcassonne SNCF

Up to date time tables easily available on the web.

Coming from Perpignan there is only a bus.  No trains.

Volunteers usually let us know when they expect to arrive in Quillan and we are there to meet them.

If you are calculating driving distances and times mappy.com is a very useful site to know about.

Rail tips

This is a very good cheap deal connected with SNCF for adults and children from Paris (near Disney land) to major southern towns such as Montpellier and Toulouse.  Recent guests came down with it it cost 25 Euros for adults and 5 Euros for children!!!

Here is the cadastre of the village.  The Maison d'Eglise is parcelle number 108 the little path outside is for paedestrians only.  You can click on it to enlarge the map.

Getting to the Chateau from Carcassonne direction

When you leave Carcassonne travel south through Limoux.   After Limoux look out for the view of Alet a beautiful ex-city with a ruined cathedral where Nostredamus once lived.  Continue through Couiza and on the right after the southern entry road to Esperaza on the D118 you turn to your right into a small lay-by before crossing over the D118.  Then 3.5 kms to intersection.  Turn right 1.5 kms to st ferriol.

When you approach the cross roads of St Ferriol you hang a left up into the village.  This is a narrow road that forks.  Both forks continue to climb up into the village.  The right fork is a more gradual ascent and if you keep on following it to the left will bring you to the south side of the chateau.  you can park here on the left opposite the pomegranite bushes and the lamp posts against the chateau.  If you follow the wall of the chateau westwards you arrive and the entry of the chateau and the south end of the church.  The chateau Porch is to the East of the church`s eastern flank.

Getting to the Chateau from Carcassonne Toulouse airport

When you leave the airport take the direction for Montpellier.  Take the Castelnaudary exit, take a left at the first t-junction (not direction Mirepoix).  At the first roundabout take direction Limoux, This is an old Roman road and you just drive straight for 15 minutes.  Alternatively you can take the second exit Bram, also then following the signs for Limoux. Keep following the signs for limoux at next roundabout.  The Bram and Castelnaudary exits meet up at the Fanjeaux roundabout.  Drive through Limoux in the direction of Quillan.  you will by-pass Alet ( a must see) then drive through Couiza.  After Couiza you will pass an intermarche supermarket  continue towards Quillan and just after the right turn for Esperaza there is a left turning (including a little lay by to the right to make turning left safer) directions Saint Just, Granes and Saint Ferriol.  Take this road until first T-junction and then right to Saint Ferriol.  Saint Ferriol is 2.5 kms from here.   When you approach the cross roads of St Ferriol coming from the  Couiza direction you take a left.

To get there from Barcelona

Here are links for Public Transport from Barcelona to Quillan.  Once you arrive in Quillan your accommodation is a short walk from the station.

Above outlines the journey by train via Carcassonne.  It is possible to reduce the actual traveling time and cost by traveling via Perpignan and then taking the bus from there to Quillan.  However the Perpignan to Quillan bus is not frequent and does not run at all on Sundays.  See below.

Getting to the Chateau from Perpignan airport

Follow the direction ‘Foix’ from Perpignan.  Is it a route nationale so the sign post is green. It is the same exit as Perpignan airport. You will keep following the direction Foix through Estagel, Maury, St Paul and Caudies eventually arriving in Quillan.  From Quillan you follow the direction Carcassonne on the Route National D118.

Just after Quillan you will pass a rugby stadium on your right and some building yeards garages etc but the first proper road on your right will be sign posted to St Ferriol, Laval and St Louis.  If you get to the round about with a sculpture of a fish on it you have gone too far.  Take the right to St Ferriol and continue for about 600 metres and take the first left.  Again St Ferriol is sign posted.  Climb this road for about 4 kms.  St Ferriol will be the first village that you come to.  At the cross roads take a right and keep on climbing up in to the village.  The road forks and it is a bit more of a comfortable dribe to take the less steep right hand fork keep following it and swerve to the left at the top and if you go straight on you will find yourself on the south side of the château.
